SERGEANT MAHONEY (Short novel)
Sergeant Mahoney loves the desert, more particularly in the freezing orange-coloured sunrise. But on this morning of June ‘42, he is indifferent to the landscape as he crosses the camp. Chest thrown out, gun over his shoulder, the sergeant marches in step preceded by the German officer, his hands crossed on his head. Stopping their early drill, some soldiers watch the amazing scene. The surrender of an 'Afrikakorps’ officer? The unbelievable news spreads through the camp like bracing air, spreading cheer after too many defeats.
